Snicker all you want about its two-dimensional graphics, Pong deserves a slot on this list because, as the first arcade cabinet to catch fire with the mainstream, it’s arguably most responsible for the modern video gaming phenomenon realspins. A table tennis simulator developed by Atari and first released in 1972, the multiplayer game consisted of a pair of dial-controlled paddles and a bouncing ball—just enough to qualify it as the first sports video game. The popularity of the arcade version led to an in-home setup that was sold by Sears in 1975. And when imitators including Coleco and Nintendo followed, the first shots were fired in the console wars. Sure, by today’s standards it’s not as riveting as others on this list, but then that largely depends on who you’re playing against.

Well before The Last of Us tugged at people’s heartstrings, developers Naughty Dog had begun to lay the groundwork for “playable movies” with the Uncharted series. Following the globe-trotting adventures of an Indiana Jones-like hero in the present day, the series stars professional thief with a heart of gold, Nathan Drake, as he plunders underground tombs for ancient relics that would be worth a fortune if they weren’t a threat to humanity.

Final Fantasy’s OG PlayStation family saw two high-flying siblings stand either side of a weird emo kid with great hair. FF IX is probably the most straight-laced of the bunch, which is really saying something given one of your party members is a giant frog chef. Nevertheless, it uses that breathing room to tell a classic fantasy story of heroes, a princess and Michelin-starred swamp cuisine.

Game 1 world series

The game started as a pitcher’s duel, as the high-powered lineups were held to one combined run through five innings — a Will Smith sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth that gave Los Angeles a 1-0 lead.

Gleyber Torres did not hit a home run — as you can see in the clip below, a fan (wearing a Dodgers jersey, of all things) reached over the wall to grab the ball. It wasn’t a particular tough call, so far as these things go. Torres instead had to settle for a double:

Jack Flaherty pitched 5 1/3 innings for the Dodgers, striking out six and allowing two runs. Gerrit Cole pitched into the sixth inning but was removed before recording an out. He finished with four strikeouts, allowing only one run.

Freeman had sat out Game 6 of the NLCS because of the ankle sprain. He’s not as bad off as Gibson was when he was relegated to the Dodger bench with a pulled left hamstring and swollen right knee in ’88, but he really needed those four days off between rounds.

Game 2 world series

While Freeman celebrated the first walk-off slam in World Series history by pointing his bat toward the sky and releasing it like a mic drop before starting his trot, it was third baseman Max Muncy’s bat that went flying through the air.

“I was actually standing on the top step of the dugout, holding my bat, talking to about how there’s actually no way I can get up this inning, so I don’t know why I have my bat,” said Muncy, whose walk-off homer ended an 18-inning marathon in the 2018 World Series Game 3 win over the Boston Red Sox.

Top of the second: Jazz Chisholm grounded out before Yoshinobu Yamamoto walked Anthony Rizzo. Anthony Volpe lined out sharply to Tommy Edman in center field. Austin Wells grounded out to Kiké Hernández at third.

Phillips, one of the team’s top three leverage relievers along with Blake Treinen and Michael Kopech, said he is “progressing each day, hoping to make big strides in a short amount of time,” but to be added to the World Series roster, another pitcher has to get hurt.

Gary D: “The Dodgers have a top four that you can’t pitch around. And they have a long lineup, too. Their relief staff is deep enough so that if one pitcher isn’t having a good night they can bring in four or five other good pitchers. So if their starters pitch well, as they’ve done so far, it’s really tough to beat them. Maybe one or two games, sure, but four is just not too likely.”
